Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam II
1. When Sultan Hashim Jalilul Alam died, the responsibility of the Sultan was in the hands of the ‘Majlis Pemangku Raja’, that is the council of Regency.
2. In 1918, the eldest of Sultan Hashim Jalilul Alam named Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam II was crowned as a Sultan.
3. His Royal Highness was very interested in the country’s progress. He encouraged advances in agriculture, medicine and education such as the teaching and learning of Islam which was often carried out in the small mosques, also called as ‘surau’.
4. He built a mosque on a piece of land near the present Kampong Sultan Lama as a sign of his commitment to Islam, despite the country’s lack of revenue. The mosque was eventually destroyed in wartime bombing during the reign of Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin.
5. During Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam’s reign, in 1912, the Islamic law, called ‘Muhammadan Law’, was introduced to replace the ‘Kanun Brunei’ and a year after, in 1913, the ‘Marriage and Divorce Act’ was introduced too.
6. His Royal Highness didn’t have much say in the government even though he kept his position in the State Council because of the introduction of the Residential System in Brunei which started in 1906.
7. Under the Residential System, all the executive power, except in matters of religion, was transferred from the Sultan to the Resident.
8. An outbreak of malaria claimed Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam’s life, as well as three members of his family.
9. His life ended in September 1924, at the age of thirty-five and he was, then, succeeded by Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin, his eldest son.
